Fear Free Vet Care in Buda, TX
When you care about how it’s done, not just getting it done.
For a lot of pets, the vet is the scariest place they go. For a lot of owners, it can be hard to watch. You want your pet to get the care they need, with people who notice when they need a break and adjust the experience accordingly.
At Buda Veterinary Care, we train every member of our team to recognize fear, anxiety, and stress. You don’t have to be your pet’s only advocate here.
Every person. Every room. Every time.
What it means to be a Fear Free certified practice
Buda Veterinary Care is the first and only Fear Free® Certified Practice in Buda and all of Hays County! While individual professionals can become Fear Free certified, it took over a year for us to receive certification for our entire hospital:
- Every member of our team trains in Fear Free care, from our receptionists at the front desk, to veterinarians in the exam room, to our hospital managers in the office. Basically, everyone who has interaction with your pet, is certified.
- We meet 35 Fear Free standards for how we handle patients, set up our building, support our team, and help pet owners.
- A Fear Free reviewer watched our team care for patients in a live review and interviewed our staff. We’ll go through this review every three years to keep our practice-wide certification.
For you and your pet, our hospital certification means consistency at every appointment and interaction, no matter which member of our team you see.
Fear Free Experiences at Buda Vet Care

Someone notices fearful behavior before you have to say something.
A stiff body. A whale eye. Ears pulled back. Everyone at Buda Vet Care is trained to catch small signs of fear or anxiety in cats and dogs, so you don’t have to be the only advocate for your pet.

Dogs and cats have dedicated spaces.
Cats and dogs have separate entrances, separate waiting areas, and separate exam rooms. A more peaceful entrance means a more peaceful visit. Each space uses calming pheromones specifically made for that species: Feliway for cats and Adaptil for dogs.

Your context shapes the whole visit.
You know your pet best. We’ll have you fill out a Pet Emotion Questionnaire before you come in, so we’re all on the same page about how best to support your cat or dog with a good experience before you step foot through our doors.

We’d rather stop than push through.
If your pet gets too scared, we always stop to make sure the next experience is a better one. You won’t be charged for services we didn’t complete. We’ll plan the next visit together, and we may send you home with medication at no charge to help your pet stay calmer.

Good things happen here.
Treats, time, and trust are at the core of what we do, which means we make space for non-essential visits that can help your pet get to know us before any medical treatment.
What to expect at your dog’s Fear Free vet visit
Every dog is different, so every visit here starts with yours. Here’s how a visit usually goes, and where it might look different from what you’re used to.

Want to talk through your dog’s visit first? Text our team or call 737-283-2838.
Arriving
What you might picture
A busy lobby, other dogs a few feet away, and a wait by the front desk.
What happens here
You come in through the dog entrance, where barriers keep dogs from seeing each other. Whenever we can, we take you straight to an exam room. If your dog does better with no lobby at all, we can have you use our room with its own outside entrance, or wait in your car until we’re ready for you.
Meeting our team
What you might picture
A stranger reaching right for your dog.
What happens here
We let your dog come to us. If your dog is unsure about new people, we keep the number of people they meet small, and the same team member can stay with them through the visit.
The exam
What you might picture
Your dog lifted onto an exam table and held still.
What happens here
We use a gentle approach, and examine your dog where he is most comfortable—be it on the table or on the floor. Treats come the whole time.
If your dog starts to struggle
What you might picture
Holding on tighter so everyone can get it done.
What happens here
We pause and try another way. If it’s still too much, we stop and make a plan for next time.
What to expect at your cat’s Fear Free vet visit
If getting your cat to the vet is so hard you’ve put it off, you’re our favorite kind of client.

Let’s plan your cat’s visit. Text our team or call 737-283-2838.
Before you leave home
What you might picture
Pulling your cat out from under the bed, then a car ride full of yowling.
What happens here
We help before you ever leave the house. Our owner, Dr. Ontiveros (Dr. O to our clients), has tips for getting your cat used to the carrier. If the car ride is the hardest part, we can talk with you about calming medication before the visit.
Arriving
What you might picture
Your cat’s carrier on the floor next to a curious dog that’s trying to sniff them.
What happens here
Cats have their own entrance and a waiting area away from dogs. Whenever we can, we take you straight to a cat-only exam room, where it never, ever smells like dogs.
The exam
What you might picture
Your cat pulled out of the carrier and held by the scruff.
What happens here
Your cat can rest on a towel sprayed with Feliway, a calming cat pheromone, and lick a feline treat while we work. If they need a little support, we use a snug towel wrap to make them feel secure. We never scruff cats.

Try a PAWsitive Visit!
How do you know Buda Vet Care is the right fit?
You don’t have to book a full exam to get to know us. A PAWsitive Visit is our version of a happy visit: non-medical time with one of our technicians that’s all about helping your pet feel comfortable here.
We go at your pet’s pace, with treats, praise, and gentle practice with the things that usually make them nervous. Sometimes walking in, exploring a room, getting a treat, and leaving happy is a big win.
In the neighborhood? Stop by with your pet anytime! Our reception team will say hi and happily hand out a treat (or a few!). Over time, these visits help your pet learn that this is a place where good things happen.
